From SecurityForest

The housekeeping stage of the attack methodology comes about once the attacker’s objective has been achieved. Housekeeping includes hiding the fact that the attacker has had any contact with the system by covering his tracks, cleaning up any mess he may have caused, re-enabling any services he may have disabled, hiding files and evidence, etc. The attacker could create “backdoors” that would allow him future access to the system. Finally, the attacker could expand his influence to reach other networks and systems.
